The honest pitch
What this actually does to your Golf R
The MK7.5 R is the quiet one in the family — sensible, fast, almost too composed. The flaps barely open unless you're knocking on the rev limiter in Race.
Open Valve unlocks the version of the R that owners spent a decade asking for. Same engine, same pipework, completely different attitude.

Long read
The Volkswagen Golf R valve story
The MK7.5 Golf R is the quiet one in the family — sensible, fast, almost too composed. The 2.0 EA888 has plenty of character; the valved back-box (OEM or optional Akrapovic) has plenty of capability. The factory valve map barely lets either show. Race mode opens the flaps for narrow windows; everywhere else they cycle shut.
Open Valve pins the rear valve open. The R then crackles on overrun, snorts between shifts and runs at a healthy three to four dB louder at cruise than stock-with-flaps-shut. Stage 1 and Stage 2 tuned cars sound considerably more aggressive too — the bigger blow-off and fuller midrange come through the back-box without the damping.
Single actuator, single module. Install lives behind the rear bumper on the driver's side, in the wheel arch liner. About ten minutes with a trim wedge.
Install — step by step
- 01
Lower the rear of the driver's-side wheel-arch liner.
- 02
Trace the valve actuator wire from the rear silencer to its 2-pin grey connector.
- 03
Disconnect, plug module inline.
- 04
Velcro module body to chassis rail.
- 05
Refit liner.
- 06
Pair fob, test.
In the box
- One valve override module (one per actuator)
- Two-button RF key fob (CR2032 pre-installed, spare in the box)
- OEM-pattern connectors — no cutting, no splicing, no scotch-locks
- Printed install card with model-specific photos and a workshop QR link
Fitment notes
- ·MK7.5 Golf R (2017–2020) only. MK7 (2013–2016) uses a different actuator pinout — see the MK7 module.
- ·Compatible with OEM and Akrapovic valved back-boxes.
- ·MK7.5 R wagons / Audi S3 8V.5 use the same actuator — kit cross-compatible.
Volkswagen Golf R — FAQ
Does it work with the optional Akrapovic exhaust?+
Yes. The Akrapovic uses the same OEM actuator and same connector. Same kit, same install.
Will it work on a Stage 1 or Stage 2 tuned car?+
Yes — the module is signal-level only and doesn't care about ECU tune. Tuned cars usually sound more dramatically different because there's more to hear.
Will it throw a warning light on the dash?+
No. The module sits in the signal path between the ECU and the actuator motor. The ECU sees a normal actuator response back, so there's nothing to flag. We've shipped thousands of these and not had a single check-engine call linked to the module itself.
Is it reversible?+
Yes, fully. Unplug the module, plug the OEM connectors back into each other, refit the trim — about three minutes' work. There's no permanent change to the car, no part cut, nothing in the ECU. Dealer service visits, MOT, sale to a new owner — pull it out and it's like it was never fitted.
Does it work with an aftermarket exhaust?+
If the aftermarket back-box retains the OEM-pattern valve actuators (most do — Akrapovic, Milltek, IPE, Capristo all run the factory motors), yes. If the system is a straight-through with no valves, there's nothing for the module to override.
Is the Dynamic Sound (cabin symposer) affected?+
No — that's a cabin-only feature driven by the infotainment. It stays as factory.
Will dealer diagnostics see anything?+
No. The module is invisible to OBD scans. ODIS, VCDS and dealer tools all see a normal valve state.
